Loving these colorful shoe laces—created by Jasmine Takanikos for Benjos. Can’t wait to rock these on my fall boots. Oh, and I’m not much of a penny loafer girl but if you are, the colorful pennies Takanikos made for Benjos are possibly the best way to wear loafers…ever.
At last…Spring. Warmer temperatures bring out shorter hemlines revealing our wintery pale skin. Here are a few of my favorite products and tips to carry you into summer.
If you are super pale, I’ve found that Clairins Instant Self Tanning Gel works best. The more pale your skin, the harder it is to get a non-streaky, natural look which is why I like this product — it’s gel texture allows for an easy application, goes on smooth, and isn’t too dark.
If you naturally have a little olive/yellow in your skin tone or feel like you’re a veteran self-tanner, my favorite is St. Tropez Mousse Bronzer. It has more color to it than Clarin’s Gel but still goes on smooth and streak-free (if you know what you’re doing). The foam liquifies as soon it it hits the skin and the faster you rub this product in the better.
Even though the other two can double as face products, I like using Lancome Face Flash Bronzer since it has SPF 15—it’s perfect to rub on your face before hitting the beach or lounging poolside. Also, I love the immediate glow this product gives.
PRO TIP: Don’t forget to exfoliate! Use rubber gloves to apply to avoid that weird dark palm syndrome you see on some ladies.
I like a lot of different powder bronzers but more recently have been using one by NARS. Make sure to not go too much darker than your skin-tone and only apply where the sun would hit you naturally (cheeks, bridge of nose, forehead, chin). Don’t forget to add a dash of pink blush for dimension.
When the season changes, so does my makeup bag. Therefore, I’m blaming the weather for these purchases. The sun was shining on my face on my walk to Sephora so by the time I was at the register with my routine supplies I noticed all of these randoms in my basket. Oops.
Teddy Girl by butter™ LONDON (Light Pink)
Trout Pout by butter™ LONDON (Pink / Coral)
Riveria by Dior (Bright Coral)
Niagara lip color by NARS (Pink / Coral)
I just bought myself a one way ticket on the pink and coral train—next stop, SPRING! (choo, choo!)
If you’re looking for a serum to protect your hair from damage, I’ve found Alterna Anti-aging Overnight Rescue to be a total hair saver. I’ve already mentioned which shampoo & conditioner I’ve been loving lately but have been using this product at night to save my ends. Like the other hair products I use, I love this because it never weighs my hair down or leaves residue. Hey, every girl needs a little help from time to time…
You can find this product at any Sephora or you can be lazy, like me, and order online.
This springy weather has me in the mood to shop. First up, bags. I organized my handbags the other day and realized I havent purchased a new one in a long time. Unacceptable. Just kidding…but seriously, I think this is mainly because I tend to purchase classic styles and colors. I’m looking to break my mold—looking for fun colors and textures this spring. So far, the top brands I’ve been admiring are Lizzie Fortunato, 10 Crosby Derek Lam, Loeffler Randall, Steven Alan, Moyna, and Foley + Corinna. They have the perfect edgy mix of pony hair, beads, mixed patterns, and/or color that I’m looking for and that I know I won’t grow tired of too quickly. Excited for warm weather!
I’m pretty satisfied with my shower line-up. Here’s why:
My hair is dry and tends to break easily but its hard to find a good shampoo & conditioner that will condition but not weigh down. However, I found one I love. Davies Mulu Shampoo & Conditioner does just that. Bonus—the scent is great.
I’ve always been a Dove unscented bar soap girl — it’s gentle and doesn’t dry out my already dry skin but recently I switched and started using L’Occitane Shea Butter Extra Gentle Soap and—WOW! It’s five times more expensive than Dove but totally worth it.
I’m a huge fan of exfoliation. I think I probably exfoliate more than anyone I know, seriously. Bliss Spa’s Soap’nScrub is pretty scrub-o-licious.
Umm, Aveeno. Where have you been all my life? Serioulsy, the Clear Complection Foaming Face Wash is pretty great and inexpensive.
Again, with exfoliation — obsessed. That being said, I may have tried hundreds of body exfoliators but I haven’t tried a ton of face exfoliators. I guess when you find something that works, you stick with it. I’ve been using Cliniques Exfoliating Scrub for over 10 years now. Get it. Love it. You’re welcome.
Banana Republic and Estee Lauder collaborated with AMC’s Mad Med series to define their 2013 spring collections. Banana Republic used Mad Men’s mod 1960’s fashion as inspiration for some of their new styles and Estee Lauder took a cue from the women’s on-screen beauty and launched a beautiful line of makeup products that are perfect for the spring season. Go ahead, Mod-it-up, ladies!
Just another example on how collaboration is the new competition.
Who knew Mason jars were the perfect accessory for your Valentine’s day? Cookies, hot cocoa for 2, and chic rustic vases all perfect gifts for Valentine’s Day. Grab some Mason jars and read about my DIY’s on TODAY. Everyone loves a handmade gift!
Seriously in love with all of these sneakers. I’m pretty hooked on Nike shoes from their Liberty collaborations to their running shoes and now even their weather proof boots are making my heart swoon — what’s up new snow shoes?
As for these others, every girl should own a pair of perfect black high tops, no? Ok, maybe that’s just me. But when you live in such a walkable city like New York it’s easy to fall for comfort—and comfort doesn’t have to be the opposite of chic.
Yes, I already wrote about my serious love of argan oil after I started using it almost a year ago but I am still so enthralled in this product that I find myself buying products just because they have this miracle oil in them. I’m already a Kiehl’s lover so when shopping for my all time favorite body cream and I saw they had hair and body products with argan oil — I had to test them out. Obviously.
My quick summery:
The shampoo and conditioner I found to only be MEH on the scale of BOO to YAY — a.k.a 5 on a scale of 1 through 10. The products were too rich and weighed down my fine hair but I did like using the conditioner as a once a week treatment rather than an everyday conditioner.
I have so many Sorel boots saved on my Shopbop favorites tab because as far as winter boots go—these are pretty rad. Rugged yet city appropriate. I love the old school rubber design that’s similar to duck boots and love that they come in a variety of contrasting colors, leathers, and fabrics that even though I haven’t pulled the trigger on purchasing, I haven’t been able to keep my eyes off them.
Wedding planning is a beast of a job but to be recognized for your beautiful wedding in Southern Weddings Magazine is certainly worth all of the effort, I’m sure. My friend Chrissy got married in Louisiana at The Dixie Gin cotton mill and got a two page spread on the festivities. The cotton mill itself was one of the coolest wedding venues I’ve seen so she could do no wrong using that as the backdrop. All of her other adorable decorations, flowers, colors, photo booth, and sock puppets were just added bonuses. Yes…sock puppets made to look like the bride & groom — they definitely tipped the scales of cuteness! My talented friend Courtney did the floral arrangements which, included cotton…obviously. And, yours truly did the bride’s makeup for the big day.
To increase the cuteness of their day — they couple met at a bowling ally so their wedding shoes were (duh!) bowling shoes — the bride’s were custom made complete with heels.
Dennis & I booked a New Years trip to Costa Rica a little last minute so our hotel was a few miles outside of the town (25 minute walk). We rented bikes for the week so it was fine. This was our bike ride everyday into town. I loved it. During our night rides when there were very few street lights so I used a flashlight app on my phone for us to navigate. It got pretty dark, like East-Village-during-the-black-out kind of dark.
We took three days of surf lessons and surfed one day by ourselves. The Tamarindo beach was perfect for beginner and intermediate surfers — waves were pretty consistent and never too intimidating. What I loved most was the community in the water — since we surfed in an area where the majority of surfers were beginners, everyone was incredibly supportive and nice. Every so often when you caught a wave, you’d hear hoots & hollars…which I loved.
In June of 2008 Dennis asked me to go on a bike ride because I got a new bike — as friends, I assumed this was a casual summer day activity. Again, assuming this was a casual friendly (NON-DATE) activity — I didn’t shower because who showers before a bike ride? Anyway, we rode all around — ended up storming while we were lost in Brooklyn so we took cover under a bus shelter and afterwards hit up Trout (which I believe has since closed) to grab lunch (lobster rolls). That evening we were going our separate ways and he sucker-punch-kissed me on the Williamsburg Bridge. I jumped on my bike and rode away from him so fast my hat flew off. The next day I had an emergency brunch with my girlfriends to tell them “OH. MY. GAWD. DENNIS CROWLEY KISSED ME YESTERDAY! WHAT WAS HE THINKING?! EWW!!” Even with all of the ‘eww’ faces I tried to make, I think my friends knew at that point I was already his girl. That one bike ride lead to over 4 years of dating. I guess you can say he sucker punched his way into my heart.
Fast forward to the present —
While vacationing in Costa Rica, Dennis and I rented bikes and rode them all around town. Late night while riding our bikes on the beach in the middle of a pitch black night he grabbed my hand and asked me to marry him. I said yes! I’m so excited for the next chapter of our lives and looking forward to many years of happiness and even all of the sucker punches in between.
There’s really nothing more I love than seeing friends in magazines I read — from Nylon to Wired — I am always thrilled to see friends get recognized for doing what they do best. Of A Kind’s, Claire & Erica always look gorgeous but with a little makeup skills from your’s truly, they look a little extra glam in December’s Nylon magazine.
(toot toot <— that’s me tooting my own makeup skills horn)
It’s a bracelet, it’s a flask — no, it’s SUPER BRACELET! I’ve always been a believer of killing two birds with one stone or being able to multitask so when Cynthia Rowley released her flask bangles, I definitely swooned over her design. I’ve always wanted a flask and this one just seems way more up my alley.
Literally. This 24 carat gold plated ring contains glow in the dark powder which activates at night to glow green. Other designs have been created to glow blue or purple and they even made one in rose gold. Swoon.
So like I said, this ring puts a glow on my face but then again I kind of love all the designs by Bex Rox.

I know you’ve seen tons of gift guides already but I thought I would post my own in case you’re still looking for those last minute gifts before heading out for the holidays. Not sure what to get your best girl friend, guy in your life, or parents / parent-in-laws? It’s OK — no one does. All we know is that nobody ever wants a partridge in a pear tree, besides, what the hell is that anyway?
So while I shopped for my gifts this year I came up with some good ideas I’ve been sharing with friends on what they can get their loved ones.
Gifts for Her:
Look around in her makeup bag / vanity — buy her a gift set of beauty products she loves or a gift card for her favorite store
Scarves, gloves, winter wearables — yes, she probably already has these but upgrading the version she already owns will ensure she will love it
Jewelry — let’s face it, all girls love jewelry. Just make sure you know her taste or go super thoughtful like a Three Jane map necklace which includes a small diamond which you can use to mark any spot that may be special to her (family’s home, a first kiss, etc)
Gifts for Him:
Guys love their basics — like tee shirts, socks, or plain scarfs — try getting them an upgraded version of these. Cashmere scarves, high quality tees — anything from Everlane and he’s sure to love it
Guys love games — lets face it, do they ever really grow up? Buy a nice poker chip set & gift it to him along with an already planned night with his buddies to play poker that you set up
Gifts for Parents:
Always think soft, comfy, food, or anything thoughtful and you’re sure to hit this one out of the park. If all else fails get them slippers like these ones — trust me, they amay not score high on the fashion scale but they are amazing
City Grit makes amazing gift baskets with food, spices, and/or sauces
You can never go wrong with decorations for their homes, trees, or yard
If you parents love fresh flowers, consider getting them a subscription to H.Bloom. They not only will love it but think of you once a month when their delivery shows up at their door step
Still looking for gift ideas for the holidays? Check out The Startup Chef — a charity cookbook that just launched today featuring 75 recipes from inspiring leaders. I’m thrilled to say that my recipe made it into the book (Dad’s White Bean Chili — or should I say my dad’s recipe. Hi dad!) Friends, Maya Baratz and Hunter Walk are the masterminds behind this creation and I want to congratulate them on rounding up all of these delicious recipes and assisting in the fight to end hunger.
From Maya + Hunter:
A cookbook by people who make technology products may seem a bit counterintuitive at first. Technology, after all, is about bytes, not bites.
But the creative process that goes into cooking a great meal — and the raw vision, passion and imagination one applies to making something new out of a sum of unsuspecting ingredients — is not so different from the process of creating innovative technology products.
Much like the process of creating a startup, this book is a work in progress. And the 75-and-counting recipes, vignettes and photos in it (we will continue to add more to the book, in dynamic fashion, as we gather them) provide a sneak peek into the more personal side of the founders, investors and writers that power the tech industry.
What does the founder of the most popular blogging platform on the internet make for breakfast? What type of creative pastry do Randi Zuckerberg and her sister Donna whip up for their family during the holidays? It’s all in here, with their own personal stories and recipes, for you to make and enjoy (in a totally non-creepy, non-Single-White-Female sort of way). And of course it wouldn’t be a launch if there wasn’t that ‘one more thing’: all proceeds from the book will go to charities aiming to end hunger — ranging from feeding hungry children in the US to helping feed families severely affected by Hurricane Sandy.
We’re thankful to work in an industry filled with warm-hearted leaders who can not only cook a great meal, but help feed those who need it. Thanks for taking this first step with us. We hope it’s love at first bite!
My mom’s favorite past-time is vintage shopping. Her entire home is decorated in chic vintage collectibles from sofas, armoires, tables, clocks, and lamps to everything else in between. She also collects amazing vintage jewelry which ranges from interesting costume pieces to gorgeous filigreed cocktail rings with European cut stones. I’m clearly obsessed. I think what makes this work for her is having the knowledge of what is desirable and what is junk. She can go into any vintage shop, dealer, or auction and leave with some amazing piece that is always worth more than what she paid for it.
My favorite past-time is visiting my mom and going thru this amazing jewelry collection….obviously. This is how I got my new vintage watch. This piece isn’t anything super special in terms of it’s worth or collectible status but I think its beautiful none the less. It has a gold band and a concave glass face with diamonds and ruby baguettes. It actually doesn’t even work and is perpetually stuck on 6:30 so for now it functions as a bracelet that always lets me know it’s happy hour somewhere.
Balloon dresses may look awesome but I’d be on pins and needles if I wore one of these — err, actually I’d hope there weren’t any pins and needles around me when I had it on. However, I would love to shoot an editorial with these bad boys!
I just got super jazzed up about jewelry and went on a rampage to find a few pieces from designers I love. Also, because I know Shopbop is having a huge deal for Black Friday. Here’s a list of super hot pieces I’m keeping my eye on — and perhaps plan to buy at the end of today…
I’m completely enamored with these silver Loeffler Randall oxfords but understandably they can be a bit pricey for most with a price tag of 350 dollars — however, there are great alternatives out there like these silver oxfords I found on Tobi which recently went on sale for 15 bucks! This is is more of a splurge versus steal situation rather than save.
In this episode of Kmart Fashion Conversations on Style, I’m on a mission to find a great day to night dress for the upcoming holiday season. I scour the East Village in search of a great dress — of course, I find the perfect vintage black mini at one of my favorite stores, Duo.
My advice to take any look from day to night is to dress it up with jewelry or a bright lip color.
I’ve always been one to wear subdued neutral colors and classic silhouettes but when I do want to mix it up, I love doing so with printed, patterned, and textured fabrics. It’s a great way to add dimension any any outfit without crossing out of my typical style comfort-zone.
Tucker is one of my go-to brands for cool printed silk tops, pants, and jumpsuits.
Equipment has great sheer tops w have cool patterns.
Do certain people ever inspire you? I feel inspired every time I hang out with the Fortunato sisters. They are a super sharp duo who built an amazing jewelry line in an such an organic manner and I love how they play off each other’s strengths as they continue to build their brand. If they weren’t so darn sweet, I’d probably hate them. Just kidding — but seriously, I admire them.
